When Read Naturally co-founder Candyce Ihnot was completing her Master’s degree in Special Education in 1989, she designed a unique strategy to help struggling readers. This approach, a combination of teacher modeling, repeated reading, and self-monitoring of progress, proved highly successful with her students. Inspired by the results, Candyce and her husband Tom developed materials to help other teachers implement the same strategy in their classrooms. In 1996, Candyce received the National Urban Education Teacher Recognition Award for developing the Read Naturally strategy and for her approach to training teachers.
Since its launch in 1991, Read Naturally, Inc. continues to be the pioneer in improving fluency, garnering rave reviews and industry recognition from educators, parents, and students across the county. One Minute Reader, Read Naturally’s in-home reading fluency program, has also been honored by the industry. The program has won the Teachers’ Choice Award for the Family from Learning magazine two years in a row, an iParenting Media Award, two Distinguished Achievement Awards from the Association of Educational Publishers, the 2006 National Parenting Seal of Approval, and a 2007 Independent Publisher Book Award.
