Exercise options: Customizing Word Warm-ups Live for Students

You can use Exercise Options to change the number of times a specific student performs certain steps.

To open the Change Exercise Options page from the Word Warm-ups Live Student Module:

1. In the student module, click the Teacher button in the page header.
2. In the dialog that opens, enter your User ID and Password and click Log in.
3. Select Change Exercise Options.

• For students with a lead teacher, in Read Naturally Live, a staff member in the Teacher role needs to be a student's Lead Teacher to make changes like these. Word Warm-ups Live allows any Teacher to change a student's Exercise Options.

Changing Decode & Read Along requirements for a student

By default, all students see the Decode & Read Along step, but students are not required to complete the step to move on. A teacher can change whether the Decode & Read Along step is shown to a student, and can assign a required number of Decode & Read Alongs to students who see the step.

To turn the Decode & Read Along step off for a student:

1. In the student module, click the Teacher button in the page header.
2. In the dialog that opens, enter your User ID and Password and click Log in.
3. Select Change Exercise Options. 
4. In the Word List Exercises area, turn the Decode & Read Along toggle off.
5. Click the Save button.
6. Click Close to return to the student's current step.

To change the number of required readings on the Decode & Read Along step:

1. In the student module, click the Teacher button in the page header.
2. In the dialog that opens, enter your User ID and Password and click Log in.
3. Select Change Exercise Options. 
4. In the Word List Exercises area, choose the new number of decode & read alongs from the Required decode & read alongs control.
   You can require 0 to 3 read alongs on this page. If a student has 0 required read alongs but the step is on, they can choose to perform a read along but they do not need to do so before moving to the next step.
5. Click the Save button.
6. Click Close to return to the student's current step.

Setting the number of Word List Practices

By default, three Practice attempts are required for word list exercises. You can set the number of practices from 1 to 5 for each student, depending on the student's individual needs.

Students need to complete the required number of practices while also meeting their WCPM goal at least once in order to move on.

To change the number of required Word List Practice steps:

1. In the student module, click the Teacher button in the page header.
2. In the dialog that opens, enter your User ID and Password and click Log in.
3. Select Change Exercise Options. 
4. In the Word List Exercises area, choose the new number of practices from the Required practices control.
5. Click the Save button.
6. Click Close to return to the student's current step.

Note

Any student who completes 10 Word List Practice attempts will be able to move to the next step in an exercise, whether or not he or she has met the WCPM goal.

Setting the Duration of Word List Timings

By default, Word List timings are set to a Whole list duration. If you have a student who, after multiple practices and extra support, cannot read a word list's words both down the columns and across the rows, you may want to adjust the student's Word List Goal and/or change the duration story option to 1 minute. 

The 1 minute exercise option stops each timing after 60 seconds. A bell sounds, and students are asked to click the last word they read when the timing ended. Whether a student performed a Whole list or 1 minute timing, the reading rate for a timing is based on the number of words read in the elapsed time. 

To change the length of Word List timings:

1. In the student module, click the Teacher button in the page header.
2. In the dialog that opens, enter your User ID and Password and click Log in.
3. Select Change Exercise Options. 
4. Under Word List, select a Whole list or 1 minute duration.
5. Click Save or Save & Close.

Setting the number of Read Alongs

By default, one Read Along is required for Story exercises. You can set the number of Read Alongs from 1 to 3 for each student. 

To change the number of required Story Read Along steps:

1. In the student module, click the Teacher button in the page header.
2. In the dialog that opens, enter your User ID and Password and click Log in.
3. Select Change Exercise Options. 
4. In the Story Exercises area, choose the new number of read alongs from the Required read alongs control.
5. Click the Save button.
6. Click Close to return to the student's current step.

Setting the number of Story Practices

By default, one Story Practice is required for Story exercises. You can set the number of practices from 0 to 3 for each student. For example, you might set the number of story practices to 0 for an older student who is not challenged by the story exercise. You could set the number to 3 for a student who needs more practice.

To change the number of required Story Practice steps:

1. In the student module, click the Teacher button in the page header.
2. In the dialog that opens, enter your User ID and Password and click Log in.
3. Select Change Exercise Options. 
4. In the Story Exercises area, choose the new number of practices from the Required practices control.
5. Click the Save button.
6. Click Close to return to the student's current step.

Note

• A student with 0 required story practices will still see the Practice Story step as part of each Story exercise. There will be no star to indicate required practices, though, and the Next button will be enabled before the student has completed any practices. The student can practice the story if she or he chooses.

Enabling or disabling Full Audio Directions for a student

Once a student is experienced with a given Read Live application, teachers may want the student to hear less direction audio about how to perform each step. The Full Audio Directions option allows teachers to control this audio feature.

To enable or disable Full Audio Directions in Word Warm-ups Live for a student:

1. Open the Exercise Options page, either at the student's workstation or in the Staff Member Module.
   In the Student Module, Exercise Options are part of the Teacher menu.
   In the Staff Module, you can Change Story Options from the Word Warm-ups Live page.
2. Turn the Full Audio Directions toggle ON or OFF in the Teacher menu, or
   Select or Deselect the Full Audio Directions checkbox in the Staff Member Module.
3. Click Save or Save & Close.

Choosing the Story exercise version for a student

Two versions of the Story exercise in each Word Warm-ups Live section are available. You can assign the student the easier or more challenging version:

• By default, students read the more challenging story. The more challenging version has 130-210 words and the sentences are longer and more complex than those in the easier version.
• The easier version has no more than 90 words and the sentences are shorter and simpler than those in the more challenging version.

To choose which story version a student completes:

1. In the student module, click the Teacher button in the page header.
2. In the dialog that opens, enter your User ID and Password and click Log in.
3. Select Change Exercise Options. 
4. Under Story version, select Easier or More challenging.
5. Click Save.
