Read Live Phonics Assessment

For a developing or struggling reader, every minute in the classroom is precious. The same is true for busy teachers. A student will make the most improvement—and a teacher will be the most effective—when the student is on the individualized learning path that best meets their needs. Our new Read Live phonics assessment is designed to help with exactly that.

The Read Live phonics assessment, now included in all Read Live subscriptions, allows you to easily pinpoint the exact phonics and word analysis skills each student needs. With this information, you can automatically place each student in one or more Read Live programs to optimize their progress. Addressing a student’s phonics needs alongside their fluency needs will result in quicker gains in both areas.

The Read Live phonics assessment covers everything from letter sounds to advanced multisyllabic words. Each skill area includes 5-6 test items, and Read Live recommends a stopping point when a student scores below 80%, making it easy to identify where instruction should begin. Using the student’s data, Read Live will recommend a placement assignment for the student in a Read Naturally Live phonics level, a Word Warm-ups Live section, or a Read Naturally Live sequenced level in combination with a Word Warm-ups Live section. If the teacher accepts the program’s recommendation, the student’s placement assignment will update automatically.

In addition to using the assessment to place a student, teachers can use it as a pre/post-test for the student’s skill development. This assessment also gives teachers the flexibility to test phonics skills as needed.

Teachers can access the Read Live phonics assessment through the teacher menu in the Read Naturally Live and Word Warm-ups Live student applications, and it’s available for new and existing Read Live students. Read Live provides a suggested starting point for the assessment based on each individual student’s data. Completed assessments are built into reports that show a student’s correct and incorrect responses, highlighting any gaps in phonics knowledge and showing progress over time.

By using the Read Live phonics assessment, teachers will be able to quickly and easily individualize phonics and word analysis instruction in Read Live and make decisions that will accelerate the growth of their students. We’re excited to offer this new Read Live feature just in time for the new school year—setting you and your students up for success from day one.
