Congratulations to Star Student Silas H. from Excelsior, MN! Silas is a sixth-grade student at Minnetonka West Middle School. Silas’ teacher, David Olson, had this to say about him:
Silas started the year reading 109 words correct per minute when using our district’s benchmark reading fluency passages. At conference time, his parents and teachers decided that his time spent with me would be focused on improving his Oral Reading Fluency. He agreed to change his schedule and approached this challenge with an amazing attitude from the very first day. Instead of coming to me every other day, he comes every day for 25 minutes. He challenges himself to use every second of those 25 minutes to reach his goal. He started in Level 4.0 with 108 words correct per minute. Yesterday, I moved him to Level 6.0 with a goal of 135 words correct per minute. He has met this challenge head on and is showing amazing progress! I couldn't be prouder!
The Read Naturally Star of the Month program is designed to celebrate students who work hard to improve their reading skills. Each month, we select one student to feature in our newsletter. The selected student will win a $20 Barnes & Noble gift card, and the school or teacher who nominated the student will receive a $200 gift certificate for Read Naturally materials.
If you entered the drawing and your student did not win this month, he or she will remain in the selection pool for future months!
