Adapting the Read Along Step

Four Read Naturally Strategy programs include a Read Along step in which students read the story chorally with a native speaker three times: Read Naturally Live and Read Naturally Live—Español (components of Read Live); and Read Naturally Encore II and Read Naturally Encore II—Español. This choral reading benefits all students but is especially important for expanding the language skills of multilingual learners. Consider providing additional language support for students learning either English or Spanish by adapting the Read Along step.

Direct a Spanish-speaking student to listen to a Spanish translation of the story before doing the Read Along step in English. The opportunity to listen to the story in Spanish helps the student develop an understanding of the story by building some background and vocabulary knowledge before continuing with the rest of the steps in English.

Spanish audio of the Read Along step is included in these programs and levels:

• Read Naturally Live: Sequenced series, levels 1.0–4.5
• Read Naturally Encore II: Sequenced series, levels 1.0–4.5

Or use the Spanish series available in Read Live and Encore II to help native Spanish speakers develop literacy skills and fluency in Spanish or to help native English speakers learn to read Spanish text fluently as an additional language.
