Build mastery and automaticity in phonics, decoding, and word analysis with systematic phonics instruction and multiple opportunities for students to decode and encode words easily within Word Warm-ups Live. Audio-supported phonics and word analysis lessons allow for individualization and enable students to work independently. Students progress through three sequential levels, from reading consonant-vowel-consonant words like bat, to multi-syllabic words like precautionary.

Word Warm-ups Live provides...
Word Warm-ups Live develops accuracy and automaticity in decoding through a modified version of the powerful Read Naturally Strategy of teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. Students work on short audio-supported phonics exercises for as little as 10 minutes a day as reading warm-ups or up to 30 minutes a day as an intervention.
The student clicks on a picture and hears a lesson about the word or letter under the picture. This instructional step provides teacher modeling. There are multiple sections in each level, each section focusing on intervention of different elements:
Level 1: One-syllable words | Level 2: Two-syllable words | Level 3: Multi-syllabic words | |
---|---|---|---|
Letter sounds Short vowels Long vowels with silent e Long vowel teams Consonant digraphs Consonant blends Vowels and the consonant r Soft and silent consonants Other vowel teams | Review Level 1 skills in compound words Review Level 1 skills in more compound words Base words not changed by suffixes Base words changed by suffixes Words with two syllables Closed and open syllables Two-syllable words with suffixes Two-syllable words with prefixes | Word parts: prefixes |
The student chooses an exercise to work in. Each section has six to nine exercises. Most exercises are word-list exercises, but each section has a story exercise.
If a student selects any exercise other than the story exercise, the student will see the following steps:
The student clicks a picture to hear a lesson about a featured sound, syllable, or affix. The student responds to the instruction by segmenting the featured word before reading it aloud. Then, the student clicks each of the five words to segment and reads each word with the narrator. This step helps the student learn the featured sounds or phonics patterns and provides teacher modeling.
The Decode & Read Along step helps a student learn to decode an exercise's word list by reading the list twice. When the student chooses Start Read Along on this page, the application:
Before a timing, a student can click any word to see it divided into word parts and hear each word part, as well as the whole word. Then, the student reads the words in the exercise word list, down the columns and across the rows, clicking any word he or she doesn’t know to hear the word read. The student clicks finished and sees the number of words read per minute.
The student practices reading the word lists independently until he or she can read all of the words correctly. As the student practices many words with the featured pattern, he or she learns to decode the pattern more easily and to read the words with automaticity.
This step is the repeated reading component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student apply the featured sounds, phonics patterns, or language structure to master the words. This step also allows a student to monitor progress, the component of the Read Naturally Strategy that motivates the student to improve. The student can see the number of words read per minute (wpm) and can compare the number of words read to a rank that runs from Warming-up to Shooting Star.
The student spells five words from the word list. The student listens to a word and sentence about the word and attempts to spell the word. Then, the student clicks Show Me to see if her spelling of the word is correct or if any changes are needed to make the spelling correct. The student gets full credit if she can spell the word correctly on the first try.
While the student waits for the teacher to do the pass timing on the word list and spelling words, the student reviews skills in a game format. All items in the game are clickable to support students’ varying needs and support growth in phonemic awareness, phonics, and word analysis. Requiring that the student attain a certain number of points while waiting (e.g., 10) is a good idea.
The teacher listens to the student read the word list. To pass, the student must read all the words down the columns, then across the rows, at or above the student's wcpm goal rate with three or fewer errors.
A graph of the hot-timing score shows the student’s score in red along with the rank the student attained.
The teacher reviews the student’s work in this exercise with the student and assigns any remedial options.
If a student selects the story exercise, the student will see the following steps:
The read along gives students a chance to read words with the featured phonics patterns in connected text. Ideally, students work through the story exercise after completing the word list exercises.
The student reads along quietly with a recording of a passage that contains words with the featured sounds taught in the section. The read along provides the teacher modeling component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which models correct pronunciation and helps the student learn new words and master others.
Practice
The student practices reading all or part of the story independently a set number of times chosen by the teacher. In Word Warm-ups Live, this reading isn’t timed, and there’s no fluency score. In Word Warm-ups, the purpose of the story is to have students read words with the featured phonics patterns in connected text.
The student completes a modified cloze question about the story. Each answer choice uses a featured sound from the section and provides another opportunity for the student to use the featured patterns in connected text. Responding to the text also holds the student accountable for meaning.
While the student waits for the teacher to do the pass timing on the Story and Quick Quiz, the student reviews phonics skills in a game format. All items in the game are clickable to support students’ varying needs and support growth in phonemic awareness, phonics, and word analysis.
This activity provides an opportunity for the student to apply the featured phonics elements in the context of a story. You may have the student read all or part of the story; modify your expectations based on what you know about the student.
The teacher can review the student’s responses to the quiz and offer guidance in how to correct errors. This page has a dropdown to show either the student’s responses or the correct answers. The student has the opportunity to correct the answers if the teacher assigns this option on the Remedial page.
Word Warm-ups Live is a component of the Read Live platform—a subscription program that is licensed per student. Teachers can reassign licenses if students leave the program.
A printable phonics assessment helps a teacher decide whether students should use Read Naturally Live, a specific level of Word Warm-ups Live, or both programs for students needing decoding intervention. A student must be placed in a level of Read Naturally Live in order to work in Word Warm-ups.
A student works through the sections in the Word Warm-ups Live student program, and the teacher manages the student's progress in the Word Warm-ups Live teacher program.
Word Warm-ups Live includes access to 69 exercises in nine sections of Level 1, 68 exercises in eight sections of Level 2, and 48 exercises in seven sections of Level 3. Each section has six to nine exercises and focuses on intervention for different phonics elements or word analysis:

It is difficult to find informational text that grabs the attention of students the way the stories in Read Naturally do. I have used Read Naturally since the days of the cassette version, but the computer version is terrific and even better now with the iPad version. I can have so much going on at the same time and it allows me to work with other students in other subject areas while providing interventions and remediations at the same time. It is a terrific program that tracks the data for you if you are using it for ongoing progress monitoring. Wherever I go, whenever people as if I could have only two programs what would they be, Read Naturally is one of them.
Read Live is an excellent program. It is research-based program that integrates technology. The students enjoy the program because it is self-monitored and engaging. The students can see immediate results of success and needed interventions. I highly recommend this product to anyone that is interested in empowering and engaging their students. Every child can experience success on their academic level with the opportunity of advancing to a higher challenge as they progress.
If you view Read Live as an excellent program and highly recommend this product, may I ask why you gave it only a one star? Is there something wrong or that you didn't like? Thank you!
Read Live is an amazing program! I have seen first hand how it has positively impacted our reading scores for general education students, Title 1 students, and our SpEd. students. The fact that they LOVE reading the stories is "icing on the cake"!!! Susie - RAL (Reading Achievement Leader), Kingman, Arizona
Read Naturally is a supplemental reading program that gives the children confidence and reinforces high frequency words and comprehension skills in a highly engaging way.
RLN is a beneficial program for my ELL students and I am excited to to see where it leads this year!
I use Read Naturally Live with my Title 1 Reading students. It is a great program for differentiated instruction. My students love the fact that they get to use technology to improve their reading. It is very user friendly! The program includes everything from phonics, fluency to comprehension. My students have gained great strides in their reading!!
It has been such a fabulous journey thus far to watch my readers become confident, faster readers because of Read Naturally Live! I am a reading specialist and have been teaching reading to Kg-4th grade students for ten years now. Before implementing the Read Naturally Live program, I was just not seeing the gains in fluency and reading accuracy that I'd hoped for despite using a variety of strategies. Since implementing this program, however, I have seen the greatest number of gains in my career. With the new emphasis on speed in most all state-wide assessments for determination of overall success, the daily practice of accuracy, speed and comprehension has shown remarkable results there as well. I wholeheartedly recommend Read Naturally Live as a primary source for students who struggle with fluency, accuracy, and comprehension, especially grades 2-4. Additionally, there are several teachers in my district who have successfully implemented the program as a supplement for their middle school students with IEPs. Because of its built in data collection feature, it really gives a clear picture for parents, administration, and students to monitor progress. I can honestly say Read Naturally Live is an awesome program!
I became acquainted with Read Naturally back when it was just paper, pencil and cassette tapes!! I thought it was great then and even better now that it's computerized. It's so much easier to help more students during the same time, but I wouldn't have more than 6 students at a time per educator.
Great program for ESL/EFL young learners.
Read Live has aided in the increased fluency of at least 85% of my students this year, ranging from 20 to 35 wpm since Sept. That's been a great confidence booster for my students, but that's been just one benefit. The variety and depth of the comprehension questions are so much more advanced and beneficial to my student's comprehension skills. The program gives them great tools to go back and find the answers and they're given incentives for having 100% correct the first time I check them. The open ended questions and summary are great opportunities to reinforce correct writing mechanics and sentence structure. The students get excited telling me about something they've learned in their story......"Mrs. Harlan, did you know that....." So, Read Live benefits the students in so many areas and skills.....fluency, vocabulary..... (synonym/antonym practice is super!), comprehension and composing sentences/summaries. They also love working the crossword puzzles.
I have used Read Naturally for 20 years now and I strongly recommend it. This year I am at a new school and we use the Read Naturally Live Program. At my former site we used the paper version. I have seen students move up two grade levels when the program is implemented at least 3 days a week and monitored closely. The stories are very interesting and I have learned a lot from listening to the students read them. I firmly believe in this program for improving reading fluency.
I sent the message on a Friday late afternoon and received a response on the same day. I was very impressed that the issue was taken care of so quickly. I was able to get this new student ready to begin on Monday. Joel was able to look more into my issue and told me that there was an extra license not being used. I got it!! That worked for me. A new student is beginning today and I wanted to use Read Naturally live. It is so hard to determine this late in the year who will be using the read live program. I cannot alway determine the exact number of licenses would need. I am very pleased. Thank you

This program is so amazing that I requested a grant from the Wal Mart Foundation to purchase it for our Special Education students at my school. Our district would not buy it for us. Walmart granted me $1,000 to purchase the program. It not only focuses on fluency, but has comprehension, writing, and vocabulary practice. The students are engaged with the Ipad app for the program and improving their skills. I would recommend it to everyone!
Where did you find this information about the grant. I work for a small charter school and would love to have this for my students.
Excellent service.
Read Naturally Live helps students improve their reading fluency using research-based, proven effective techniques like repeated reading and neurological impress. But the best thing about Read Live, and the reason it is so effective for struggling readers, is that students are intrinsically motivated to read, read and read some more. I love the way the nonfiction passages build background knowledge and I love watching students' reading ability increase exponentially.
I use the Read Naturally Live with my Title 1students for reading interventions. They love the program and are making great gains in their reading skills!! I would highly recommend this program to anyone!!! It is worth every cent!!
This is our first year using Read Live, and we have seen great results! The stories are engaging and our students are excited to participate. I wish we could get all of our students on Read Live!
We really like Read Live because students can start at their level and work at their own pace. It works well for us because we can give more students interventions using Read Live than trying to work with them in groups, and they get more actual reading practice time. Our students are making good progress using Read Live.
Our school utilizes this fantastic program daily! Even our parents get involved and help their own kids at home. We love the fluency progress and the ability to teach the necessary comprehension skills needed with the nonfiction passages! High interest stories with a wide variety!
We are madly in love with READ NATURALLY!!! I am currently teaching RtI grades kg-5, and use it with grades 1-5. My team teacher and I both agree that when we move back to a traditional classroom, READ LIVE will be a major component of our reading program! EVERY classroom should have this program. The results we have seen are AMAZING!! Student engagement and motivation are simply exciting to watch. Do what you have to do...just get this program!
